You added something to a page — a mobile menu, a button style, anything — tested it, published it, moved on. Weeks later you make a completely unrelated change somewhere else on that same page, publish again, and the earlier feature is just… gone. Nothing in the new edit should have touched it.

What’s actually happening
This isn’t a bug in the code at all — it’s a version mismatch. If the page content lives in a local file on your computer (rather than being edited directly on the live site), and you open an older saved copy of that file to make your new edit, you’re starting from a version that predates the earlier feature. Publishing that file doesn’t just add your new change — it silently reverts everything that was added since that particular copy was last saved, because as far as that file is concerned, none of it ever happened.
This is especially easy to fall into when the same page gets revisited for small tweaks over weeks or months — it’s simple to lose track of which saved copy on your own computer is actually the current one.

How to tell the difference
Before making a new edit, search the file you’re about to work from for a keyword tied to the earlier feature (a class name, a piece of text, an ID). If it’s missing entirely — not broken, just absent — you’re working from a stale copy, not debugging a new problem.

The fix
There’s no clever fix here beyond re-adding whatever went missing. If you catch it before publishing, add the missing piece back into the current file before it goes live. If it’s already published and reverted, you’ll need to reconstruct it (or pull it from wherever the last known-good version is saved) and re-apply it alongside your new change.

How to avoid it next time
Before starting any edit to a page you’ve touched before, pull a fresh copy directly from the live site (or wherever the current published version actually lives) rather than opening whatever copy happens to be sitting in a local folder. Treat the live site as the source of truth, not your downloads folder.
