A letter arrives in your physical mail. It has your company name, your real website address, and your actual domain expiration date printed right on it. The letterhead reads “Domain Notification Services.” There’s an urgent $85 invoice.
Your office manager cuts a check.
You just got domain slammed — and you didn’t actually renew anything.
Domain slamming works in three steps. Automated bots scrape public domain registries and harvest expiring domains along with real owner mailing addresses. A perfectly timed letter arrives just as your domain is coming up for renewal, designed to look like a bill. Hidden deep in the fine print is a single legal disclaimer: “This is a solicitation, not an invoice.” Most people never read it.
If you paid, one of two things happened. You bought a completely useless marketing listing. Or you signed a hidden authorization that transferred your domain away from your real host to a shady provider.
Three rules that make you permanently immune:
Turn on auto-renew with your actual registrar and keep a current card on file. That alone eliminates the urgency they depend on.
Enable registrar transfer lock. This prevents any unauthorized company from moving your domain, even if a fake slip accidentally gets signed.
Ignore paper mail. Real registrars don’t send paper invoices for digital domains. If it arrived by post, it’s junk.
Panic is a bad signal. Scammers rely entirely on creating false urgency to make you bypass your normal judgment. The moment something feels high-pressure, verify through your official dashboard — never through a letter.
