How to Actually Catch a Flash That Only Lasts a Few Frames

Something flashes an odd color on page load — there and gone before you can screenshot it, and completely invisible when you inspect the page’s HTML afterward, because whatever caused it never leaves a trace once the “real” content finishes loading.
Searching the DOM for the color’s name or hex code can come back with a single, unrelated match (a CSS variable definition that isn’t actually applied anywhere) — which feels like it should mean the flash isn’t real. It doesn’t mean that. It means the thing causing the flash doesn’t live in the static markup at all, so static searching was never going to find it.

What’s actually happening
A flash like this is, by definition, a timing problem, not a content problem — some layer renders before another layer finishes loading and covers it. That means the only way to catch it is to slow down or freeze time during the load sequence, not to inspect the page after the fact.

How to actually catch it
Throttle the network in DevTools (Network tab → set throttling to something like “Slow 3G”). This stretches the loading sequence out long enough to be observable instead of instantaneous.

Screen-record the reload, rather than trying to time a screenshot by hand — a recording gives you something you can scrub through frame by frame afterward, instead of one chance to react.

Extract every frame from that recording (a tool like ffmpeg can pull every individual frame as a separate image) and scan them for the flash. If you know roughly what color you’re looking for, this can be automated — no need to eyeball dozens of frames one at a time.
Once you’ve found the exact frame, you now have a reproducible timestamp — reload with the same throttling again, and use the browser’s element picker to click on the affected area during that specific window. That jumps DevTools straight to the live element while it’s actually in its flashed state, which is the only time it can be inspected directly.

An honest note on this one
This method will reliably show you what is flashing and roughly when — but it won’t always hand you a clean, one-step fix. In one real case, this technique correctly identified two independent, stacked background layers (a Cover block’s overlay and a nested Row block’s own gradient) both contributing to the same flash — but fully neutralizing both required getting two separate gradient color-stops each set correctly, and stopping short of a fully confirmed fix was the reasonable call once further attempts weren’t landing.
Not every diagnostic effort ends in resolution, and that’s fine — the value of this entry is the method, which stays useful even on the occasions where the underlying fix takes more follow-up.

How to avoid it next time
Whenever a block or component has a background color/gradient set on it “just in case” or left over from earlier experimentation, treat it as a real, load-bearing part of the design — even if it’s fully hidden once everything finishes loading. It can still paint, visibly, during the gap before an image or another layer covers it.
