Is It Broken Everywhere, or Just Here? A Faster Way to Debug Site Issues

A search console tool reports a crawl error. The instinct is to start troubleshooting the specific error message immediately — check settings, republish, contact support with the error text. That’s reasonable, but it skips a step that usually saves real time: figuring out how wide the problem actually is before diagnosing why it’s happening.

The question to ask first
If your setup has more than one site, subdomain, or section running under the same hosting account — a main site plus a blog, a shop, a docs section — check whether the same error shows up on those too, or whether it’s isolated to just one.
This single check splits the problem into two completely different investigations:
If every subdomain shows the same error → this points toward something account-wide: a hosting-level setting, a firewall rule, a DNS issue affecting the whole account.
If only one subdomain is affected, and the others are completely clean → this points toward something specific to that one subdomain’s individual setup — how it was created, a setting unique to it, something that doesn’t apply account-wide at all.

Why this matters for getting help
If you contact support and just describe the one broken thing, you’re handing them a much wider search space than necessary — they have to independently figure out whether it’s account-wide or isolated before they can even start narrowing down the actual cause.
If you’ve already done that narrowing yourself, you can say so directly: “This is failing specifically on subdomain A, but subdomain B on the same account works fine.” That one sentence rules out a huge category of possible causes before the conversation even starts, and it signals you’ve already done real troubleshooting — which tends to get you routed past generic first-tier scripts faster.

How to actually check it
Run the exact same test against each subdomain or section, one at a time, and write down the result for each — don’t just skim and assume. It’s tempting to check one other property, see it’s fine, and stop there; check all of them if you can, since “3 out of 4 are fine, but 2 of those 3 are on an unrelated older setup” is a different (and less useful) signal than “every single healthy one shares the same configuration as the broken one.”

The general habit worth keeping
Any time something is broken and you have more than one comparable thing to check against — multiple pages, multiple subdomains, multiple environments — checking the others first is almost always worth the two extra minutes. It turns “something is wrong, not sure what” into “this specific thing is different between the broken one and the healthy ones,” which is a much smaller, much more solvable problem.
