After the search tool started working, the assistant’s answers were based on live documentation but showed no “Checked:” source line, and the admin log’s sources column was empty for every search.
⚡ Quick Fix (TL;DR)
The Culprit: The source links were built only from citations the model attaches to its own text. The newer model ran the search but attached no citations, so the code had nothing to display. The search results themselves were present in the response the whole time.
The Fix: Kept the model's own citations as the first choice, and added a fallback that uses the pages the search actually returned (up to two, de-duplicated, and limited by the tool's allowed-sites list) when no citations come back. Confirmed with a live question: the line appeared and the log filled in. The takeaway: when a feature depends on something optional in a response, build the fallback from the data that is always there.
