The document.currentScript Trap

A feature that’s worked perfectly for weeks suddenly breaks — a dynamic list stops rendering, a widget goes blank — right after you turn on a more aggressive setting in your caching or optimization plugin. Nothing about the feature’s own code changed. The plugin setting is the whole story.

The specific pattern that breaks
Some inline scripts locate the part of the page they’re supposed to control using document.currentScript — a way for a script to say “find the element sitting right next to me in the HTML.” It’s a convenient shortcut: no ID needed, no configuration, it just works based on where the script physically sits on the page.

The catch: that trick only works if the script stays exactly where it was written. The moment something moves it — combining it with other inline scripts into one bundled file, for example, which is exactly what an “aggregate inline JS” style setting does — document.currentScript no longer points at anything meaningful. It ends up referencing whatever happens to sit near wherever the combined bundle landed, which is very likely a completely unrelated part of the page.
From there, the script tries to search “nearby” for its target container, doesn’t find it, and either fails silently or throws an error like Cannot read properties of null — which, notably, doesn’t clearly point back to the real cause. It just looks like something broke for no reason.

How to confirm this is what’s happening
Open the browser console (F12 → Console tab) on the affected page. If you see a null-reference error mentioning a method like .closest() or .querySelector(), that’s a strong signal — it means the script found something, but that something wasn’t inside the container it expected.

The fix
Stop relying on the script’s position in the page entirely. Instead of asking “what’s sitting next to me,” just ask directly for the container by whatever unique class or ID it has:

If there’s only ever one instance of that widget per page (true for most single-purpose sections), this is a strictly better approach with no downside — it’s simpler code that’s also immune to this entire category of bug.

How to avoid it next time
When writing any inline script meant to control a specific block of HTML, reach for a real selector — a class or ID — from the start, rather than a positional trick. It’s not just about future-proofing against optimization plugins specifically; it’s generally more robust to anything that might restructure your page later, including your own future edits.
