The Upload Button That Corrupts Its Own Files

You upload a plain data file — nothing exotic, just a .json file your site needs to read. The file manager shows it sitting there, right size, right name, nothing looks wrong. And yet whatever’s supposed to read that file fails, as if the content itself is broken.
You open the file to check. Everything looks completely normal — right up until you scroll all the way to the very end.

What’s actually happening
Most upload interfaces work by wrapping your file inside a larger request behind the scenes — a technical envelope (multipart form data) that includes some bookkeeping alongside your actual file content, then strips that bookkeeping back out once the upload lands, leaving just your clean file.
Some upload paths don’t strip it cleanly. Specifically, using a generic file-picker “select file, then upload” button (rather than dragging a file directly, or using a dedicated code editor’s save function) can leave a stray fragment of that behind-the-scenes wrapper attached to the very end of the file — a short block of leftover text that has nothing to do with what you actually uploaded. Your real content is completely intact and correct; there’s just extra junk tacked on after it.
For a file meant to be read as-is, that trailing fragment usually doesn’t matter. For a file that needs to be strictly formatted — like JSON, which can’t have anything at all after its final closing bracket — that one stray fragment is enough to make the whole file invalid, even though 99% of it is perfect.

How to tell the difference
Open the file directly and scroll to the very end. Valid JSON should end cleanly on its actual closing character with nothing after it. If you see something that looks like leftover technical debris — text mentioning “form-data,” a boundary string, or anything that clearly isn’t part of your actual content — that’s it.

The fix
Open the file directly in your host’s file manager using its built-in code/text editor — not the upload dialog, since you’re fixing what’s already there, not replacing it.
Scroll to the very bottom and delete everything after your file’s actual final character.
Save. No need to re-upload anything.

How to avoid it next time
If you know which specific upload method left the debris behind, avoid that exact one for files that need to be strictly formatted — try dragging the file directly into the file manager instead, or editing it in place if you’re just creating something new. And if any file behaves oddly right after an upload, checking the very end of it for stray leftover text is a fast, free thing to rule out before assuming the content itself is wrong.
