Where That Random “#10003;” Text Came From

You spot something faint and broken-looking on the page — a bullet point that reads correctly, followed immediately by garbled text like #10003;Something repeating the line right underneath it. It looks like a rendering glitch. It isn’t.

What’s actually happening
That 10003 is the numeric code for a checkmark character (✓), normally written in HTML as &#10003;. Somewhere in your markup, a <li> element got accidentally nested inside another <li>, something like:
<li><span><li><span>✓</span>Pure HTML files</li>#10003;</span>Pure HTML files</li>
Browsers don’t allow one list item to directly contain another. Per the HTML parsing spec, the moment the browser hits that second <li>, it silently closes the first one for you — without any warning or console error. Everything that was meant to be one clean list item now renders as two: a correct one, and an orphaned leftover fragment containing whatever text and half-broken tags were left dangling — including the & from the entity getting separated from its own code, so &#10003; renders as the literal, ugly text #10003; instead of an actual checkmark.

How to tell the difference
View the page source (or inspect the element) and look for a <li> opening tag that appears twice in a row without a </li> in between. If you find nested <li> tags, that’s it — no other bug produces this exact “correct line, then a broken duplicate” pattern.

The fix
Rewrite the line as a single, well-formed list item:
<li><span class=”check-icon”>✓</span>Pure HTML files</li>
Nothing else needs to change — this is purely a markup structure fix, not a styling one.

How to avoid it next time
This almost always comes from copy-pasting a snippet and accidentally duplicating part of it rather than fully replacing it. When editing a repeated block of list items (feature checklists, nav links, etc.), it’s worth doing a quick visual scan for any <li> that opens twice before publishing — especially after a copy-paste edit.
