Why a Security Scanner Can Flag a Plugin You Already Updated

You get a security alert naming a plugin vulnerability. You check — you’re already on the latest version. The alert doesn’t go away. Did the update not actually work?
Probably not. This is a timing mismatch, not a broken update.

What’s actually happening
Vulnerability databases (the kind hosting security scanners check against) are compiled separately from the plugin’s own release cycle. A CVE can get published — and stay listed as affecting “version X and below” — even after the plugin developer ships a fix, if the database entry hasn’t been updated yet to reflect the patched version. The lag is usually a few days to a couple of weeks.

How to tell the difference
Check the plugin’s own changelog (usually visible from Plugins → view details in WordPress) for a security-specific fix mentioned in the most recent version. If one’s there and your installed version matches or is newer, you’re already patched — the scanner just hasn’t caught up.
If there’s no security fix mentioned anywhere in the changelog, the vulnerability may genuinely still be unpatched. Check the vulnerability’s own severity/exploitability rating — many flagged issues are low severity and unlikely to be exploited, which changes how urgently it needs attention.

The fix
Re-run the scan a few days later — the flag often clears on its own once the database syncs
If it’s been more than a week and you’ve confirmed the changelog shows a real fix, that’s worth a message to your scanner’s support team directly
Don’t chase a phantom fix by reinstalling or downgrading — you’re already on the right version.
