Why Clicking a Tag or Category Can Lead to a 404

Someone clicks a category label or tag on your site expecting a list of related content. Instead: a 404 page. Nothing wrong was typed, no broken link was pasted — the click came from your own site’s native tag.

What’s actually happening
This shows up most often with a custom content type — a portfolio, a recipe library, a resource archive — that was set up with its own custom listing page, separate from WordPress’s default archive behavior for that content type. If the default archive was intentionally turned off (common when a nicer custom page was built to replace it), WordPress doesn’t know that. It keeps auto-generating links for every tag/category pointing at that now-disabled default page. The link looks completely normal. It just leads nowhere.

How to tell the difference
Right-click the tag/category link and copy its URL. If it looks like yoursite.com/your-content-type/category-name/ and that exact path returns a 404 while your actual custom listing page lives at a different URL entirely (like yoursite.com/browse/), that mismatch is the cause.

The fix
Redirect those auto-generated links to the real, working page instead of trying to resurrect the default archive. Most modern site builders let you filter a URL programmatically before it’s output — the specific method depends on your platform, but the concept is the same everywhere: intercept the broken destination, send it to the one that actually works. If you’re not comfortable editing this yourself, this is a quick fix for a developer once they know the actual working URL to redirect to.
