Why “Custom Fields” Doesn’t Show Up as an Option in Your Editor.

You need to edit a piece of extra data attached to a post — maybe a number, a date, a special label — and someone tells you to check the “Custom Fields” panel. You look everywhere in Preferences, Screen Options, every menu you can find. It’s not there. Not hidden, not collapsed — genuinely absent as an option.

What’s actually happening
WordPress only offers the Custom Fields panel as a toggle if the specific content type you’re editing has explicitly declared support for it. This isn’t a display setting or a user permission — it’s a configuration flag set when that content type was originally built. If it wasn’t included at setup, WordPress has no reason to ever show you the option, on any post of that type, no matter where you look.
This is easy to miss because it’s invisible by default rather than greyed out — there’s no visual clue that something’s missing, it just quietly isn’t there.

How to tell the difference
If Custom Fields shows up fine on regular Posts but is nowhere to be found on a different content type (a portfolio item, a product, a custom listing), that’s the signal — it’s specific to that content type’s setup, not a site-wide setting or a bug in WordPress itself.

The fix
This one needs a developer to add one line to that content type’s registration code, adding custom-fields to its declared list of supported features. Once that’s added and the page is refreshed, the toggle appears in Preferences → Panels (or Screen Options, in the older editor) exactly the way it does for regular Posts.
