Why Data Loads Fine on Your Main Site but Fails on Staging

A feature that pulls in outside data — a search box, a live list, an embedded widget — works perfectly on your real site. Test the exact same page on a staging site or subdomain, and it fails to load, sometimes with a generic “couldn’t load right now” message.

What’s actually happening
Browsers enforce a security rule called cross-origin restriction: a page is only allowed to freely fetch data from its own domain, unless the server hosting that data explicitly grants permission to other domains. Your main site and a staging subdomain (like staging.yoursite.com vs. yoursite.com) count as two different origins in the browser’s eyes — even though they’re clearly related to a person, the browser doesn’t know that, and blocks the request by default.
Your live site never hits this wall because it’s requesting data from itself. The staging environment does, because it’s reaching across to a different address.

How to tell the difference
Open dev tools (right-click → Inspect) on the staging page, click the Console tab, and reload. A message mentioning “CORS,” “cross-origin,” or “blocked by CORS policy” confirms this exact cause rather than a general bug in the feature itself.

The fix
For testing purposes: the simplest fix is often to just test against the real, live destination instead of staging, if that’s a safe option for what you’re checking
If staging genuinely needs to work long-term: the server hosting the data needs to explicitly add the staging domain to its list of allowed origins (a CORS header) — this is a one-time server-side configuration change, not something fixable from the page itself.
