You don’t need to understand your website’s code. You need to know what questions to ask about it.
Field Note #307
🔬 Generalized⏱ 5 Minutes✓ Observation from Experience
Most small business owners hand their site over to a developer or hosting provider and stop asking questions. That gap is where problems can quietly build. These five questions give you a starting point for your next conversation — whether you’re checking in with someone you’ve worked with for years or evaluating a new provider. 1. When was the custom code last reviewed? 2. Are there plugins, scripts, or integrations still active that we’re not using? 3. What happens — and what’s the recovery plan — when a major WordPress or plugin update causes a problem? 4. What are you monitoring that I can’t see from the front end? 5. If something went wrong tonight, how would we know, and how fast could we fix it? A good web professional should be able to give you a clear answer to each of these — or tell you what they need to check. If you can’t get a straight answer on some of them, that’s worth paying attention to. Your website is a business asset. Knowing how to ask about it is part of owning it.
