Your expertise should make things clearer, not harder to understand.
Field Note #296
🔬 Generalized✓ Observation from Experience
When you know your industry inside and out, it’s easy to forget how unfamiliar it can be to someone encountering it for the first time. Technical terminology can demonstrate expertise. But when a visitor has to decode your language before they can understand what you actually offer, that expertise has become friction. Your website doesn’t need to make your business sound simple. It needs to make your business understandable. A few ways to do that: → Give visitors the fast answer. Start with a plain-English explanation before diving into the technical details. → Explain jargon at the point of use. If a specialized term matters, define it where the visitor encounters it. → Serve different levels of understanding. Some people want the specifications. Others need a 10-second answer before deciding whether to take the next step. The goal isn’t to remove the expertise from your content. It’s to remove the unnecessary work required to understand it. Clarity isn’t dumbing something down. It’s knowing what matters most — and making that part easy to understand.
